Suharekë/Suva Reka Municipality

The municipality team in Suharekë/Suva Reka consists of a Resident Municipal Advisor, and a Municipal Management Consultant. RMA also coordinates the Local Economic Development activities of the LGI project.

An Economic Development consultant, of Worldwide Strategies International (WSI), a subcontractor for LGI, was stationed in Suharekë/Suva Reka for the first year of the project. The municipality, with its limited resources ands a variety of economic development related issues, represents in many respects a typical non-urban dominated municipality of Kosovo. The solutions and best practices in economic development utilized here could become good models to disseminate to other Kosovo municipalities.
The municipality of Suharekë/Suva Reka is located in the southeastern part of Kosovo. It is 18 km from the regional center of Prizren and 57 km from the capital of Kosovo. Its’ territory is 361 km2 (36,099.13 Ha. and 67m2) and represents 3.3 % of the entire territory of Kosovo.
It borders with the municipality of Prizren, Rahovec/Orahovac, Malishevë/Malisevo, Lipjan/Lipljane, Shtime/Shtimlje, Ferizaj/Urosevac and Shtërpcë/Strpce. The average area altitude is 455m above sea level, but the city of Suharekë/Suva Reka has an altitude of 400m above sea level.

The estimates of Suhareka/Suva Reka population size in 2000 were at 81.311 residents. These residents lived in the town of Suharekë/Suva Reka and 41 villages. The town of Suharekë/Suva Reka had approx. 15.000 residents. Today the municipality of Suharekë/Suva Reka is thought to have over 87.564 residents. The municipality of Suharekë/Suva Reka is predominately populated by the Albanian Kosovars (99.3 %) as well as a very small number of mostly Roma minority members (0.7 %).

Municipal Assembly consists of 41 members, elected on proportional basis from the political parties: LDK (26), PDK (10), AAK (2), LPK (2) and PReK (1)

The Directorates include: General Administration; Education; Culture, Youth and Sport; Inspection; Economy and Finance, Planning, Reconstruction and Development; Geodesy and Cadastre; Property Issues; Health; Urbanism, Emergency and Environment; Agriculture.
